Mrs. Hoy's Syllabus

  1. Plagiarism is copying someone else's work. If work turned in is not the student's work, a zero will be given and a call home to parents to inform you. Cheating is dishonest and I am sure you want your child to be hones.
  2. A tardy will be given if the student is not in their seat when the bell rings.
  3. It is an expectation that each student will come to class every day with their own pencil, planner, and composition book. A call home will be given on the second occurrence. The teacher is not responsible for providing school supplies.
  4. Rude behavior in any form is not allowed. A call home will occur if your student exhibits any rude, ridiculing, or obscene behavior. I'm positive you send your child to school to put their best foot forward.
  5. If I call home, it is with the intention that you will take care of the problem. I am not calling you to bother or annoy you!! I need help with your child.
  6. I believe if we expect the best with every student, that is often what we get. Help me teach your child how to be the best they can be.
  7. My classroom is a fun, nurturing, learning environment. Help me keep it that way, where every child feels safe and secure and a needed part of the group.
  8. This is going to be our best year yet!

Pre-AP:

These students have signed up for a course that will hold them responsible to be outstanding students. I will hold them to it. I want all students to excel, beyond what they think they can do. Students will be required to read a book (never read before) each month. A reading log will be required as well as a project. September 30th, the first project is due. They are to read The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth Speare. A reading log, story map including 10 icons of the book, and a figure of speech illustration from the book, using a quote, make up the project.

    Expectations:

    • We read!!!
    • We will come to class and be in our seat before the bell rings.
    • We bring our supplies to class every day.
    • We leave food, drinks, candy, and gum outside of class.
    • We write in pencil in our class.
    • We work together as a team in class.
    • We encourage each other to be the best we can be.
    • We raise our hand and wait to be called upon.
    • We work bell to bell.

    Restrooms:

Each student will be allowed to go to the restroom 3x during each 9 week period. We have class 55  minutes and need every minute in class. The restroom pass will be posted in the student planner. If the planner is not present, please don't ask to go.

    Procedures:

Each class period starts at the bell. There will be an assignment on the board each student will be required to participate. A grade will be taken each Friday over the assignment.

After the warm up, we begin the assignments. Most lessons are presented in the "I do, We do, You do" mode. We will be reading, writing, discussing, generalizing, summarizing, outlining, etc. Each day is full of fun! new! information.

    Calling Home:

The student will be required to call home if:
    1. he/she does not have supplies,
    2. does not have assignment,
    3. is disruptive,
    4. has an attitude that is not conducive to learning.
We all need to work together and respect the learning environment. Phone calls will be documented in View It.

    Late Assignments:

Points will be deducted for each day late. Remember any grade is better than a zero.

    Homework:

Whatever assignment is not completed in class will be completed as homework. Each student should read at least 30 minutes every night. Reading texts does not count!

    Supplies to Have:

    • 2 composition books for the year (not spirals)
    • Many pencils!
    • Red grading pencil
    • Colors/markers
    • Scissors
    • Ruler
    • Tape/glue
    • Eraser

    Closing Thoughts:

    • All students will complete their work in class. What is not finished, should be completed at home.
    • Reading is mandatory. You don't get better unless you practice!
    • Vocabulary is encouraged. Expand your vocabulary and you expand your world!
    • Also, cursive writing is not mandatory, but encouraged. On the SAT test, the students will be required to write a paragraph in cursive. This is a good time to learn.
    • Students have many opportunities to become involved. Encourage your student to join a club after school. Late buses are available.
